During A Trip To The Countryside, Kantaro Finds Himself Face-to-face With The Creature He’s Been Searching For Since Childhood. Will Haruka The Demon-eating Goblin Join Kantaro’s Band Of Supernatural Adventurers? Can Haruka Peacefully Coexist With Fox Demon Yoko, Heiress Suzu Etogawa, Sugino The White Goblin And His Wife Muuchan? Will Kantaro Be Able To Solve Feudal Japan’s Growing Demon Problem And Finish His Book By His Editor’s Deadline? Find Out In Volume One Of Tactics!

Kantaro, the hero of Tactics, is a writer and folklorist who investigates the supernatural. To help him fight evil, Kantaro frees the mighty Demon-Eating Goblin, who was sealed away ages ago. After releasing him, Kantaro gives the Goblin the name "Haruka," binding the supernatural being to him. With Yoko, a fox-demon servant, and Suzu, the inevitable cute little girl, Kantaro and Haruka roam early 20th-century Japan, exorcising evil spirits. They rescue a prostitute in Tokyo from a specter posing as her dead lover, and save two women whose souls have been stolen by magical photographs. Tactics is a handsome-looking series, however, the narrative never quite gels. The filmmakers try to establish the kind of warmly humorous relationships the characters share in Rurouni Kenshin, but the attitudes and dialogue feel forced. There's also a more-than-hinted-at attraction between Kantaro and Haruka, who takes the form of a winged bishonen (beautiful boy). Unfortunately, Tactics remains less than the sum of its parts.
