A Fantastical Masterpiece
You should see the Director's Cut...

Legend Quick Review
I love this movie, fairytale and beautiful sets and cinematography. Ridley Scott did a great job directing. This is a classic - good vs evil, its fun and Tim Curry does a great job playing Darkness.

Legend Quick Review
As a Kid, this movie blew me away with the originality, music and scope of the young actors. Looking at it now, I never really realized that Tom Cruise was the star just 2 years before "Top Gun." A fantasy lovers delight. See it.

Great!
by Jo day
Together with the Dark Crystal and the Dragonslayer the best fantasy-movie I have ever seen. I don't like that much modern computeranimated special effects. I like more... handmade stuff like this. Only the end is a bit lame. The masks and the ambience are awesome. The 80's marked the zenith in many ways of popular culture. This is one in film.

What a difference...
by movie nut (Utah)
The U.S. theatrical release of this film was completely ruined for me by the awful, anachronistic music of Tangerine Dream. What a thrill it is to finally see it as Ridley Scott intended, with Jerry Goldsmith's gorgeous, inventive score. Now the film feels much richer, nuanced and complex. Many other reviewers have complained about Lily's singing, but I found her simple folk melodies to perfectly capture the time period evoked by the filmmakers, as well as the innocence of the character. It is her singing that lures the unicorn to its doom (one example of adding that layer of complexity to the film). Another case in point is the "dress waltz" scene. Tangerine Dream's music was listless and lame, laughably simplistic and devoid of any emotion. Jerry Goldsmith transforms the scene utterly: now it positively overflows with dark desire. What a difference the right score can make.

This is one of the great classics to me
by M. Sales (OH- USA)
I had this special edition 2-dvd set a few years ago and after trading in a bunch of dvd's now I am buying some of the really good ones that I must have in my collection and this is one of them! I watched this movie every time it came on HBO when I was a kid and I've loved this movie ever since. I put it up there with The Princess Bride which is another I have seen 100 times probably! All the actors in Legend are great, especially Tim Curry who plays Darkness, Tom cruise, Mia Sara, she is so talented and beautiful. I highly recommend Legend, it has all the extras you could want and the 2nd dvd is a darker directors cut.

this film is like a glorious painting come to life
by elisabbath (north carolina)
what can i say? prepare to be swept away! this is a cinematic experience, not really a "movie" and to truly do it justice one would almost HAVE to see it on the big screen. but this longingly put together celebratory re-issue double disc dvd captures so much of the spirit of the film you will be sufficiently dazzled. enjoyable for children and adults, in no way "dumbed down" or rushed despite a nearly catastrophic studio fire carefully examined in the extras section on the dvd-- and-- it is resplendent with not one--but TWO musical scores for you to choose from! this film is simply enchanting. tim curry is almost unrecognizable beneath his make up and costume and tom cruise is an impish delite in one of his very earliest blockbuster roles. mia sara is the perfect princes and alice playton is menacingly creepy as blix. don't miss out on this. this movie deserved to do soooooo much better than it did at the box office during he time it was released. remember--you are watching ART; i'm not gonna say the plot doesn't drag and it isn't a wee bit short on dialogue--it is. but trust me, this is more than just a film. this is an experience. :)
Legend (Ultimate Edition) Summary
Tom Cruise Stars In This Visually-stunning Fantasy Adventure In Which Pure Good And Evil Battle To The Death Amidst Spectacular Surroundings. Set In A Timeless Mythical Forest Inhabited By Fairies, Goblins, Unicorns And Mortals, This Fantastic Story Has Tom Cruise As A Mystical Forest Dweller, Chosen By Fate To Undertake A Heroic Quest. He Must Save A Beautiful Princess, Mia Sara, And Defeat The Demonic Lord Of Darkness, Tim Curry, Or The World Will Be Plunged Into A Never-ending Ice Age. Co-starring Billy Barty And Alice Playten And Directed By Ridley Scott, Famed For His Remarkable Settings And Unparalleled Imagery, The Incredibly Realized Fable Is The Stuff Movie Legends Are Made Of.
This strange, 1985 experiment by Ridley Scott (
Blade Runner
) starred the up-and-coming Tom Cruise in a fairy-tale world of dwarfs and unicorns and demons. After the horn of a unicorn is broken, darkness and winter descend upon the world. Cruise's character, helped along by a magic sprite played by David Bennent (
The Tin Drum
), descends into hell to save paradise. This movie is almost a classic case of art direction gone amok. The somewhat amorphous Cruise doesn't lend much dramatic focus or artistic definition, but the drama between Tim Curry's satanic majesty and Mia Sara's character, who becomes a sort of princess of the netherworld, is pretty captivating. A mixed experience all around that makes one wish it had been more successful.
