I was pleasantly surprised by this unobtrusive little comedy. It is reminiscent of Hollywood's heyday films of the period. Miss McDormand is truly delightful, and Miss Adams plays the ditzy gold-digger to perfection.

There isn't much to this movie other than a great "look" to the sets. The various stories aren't the least bit new, and the actors really don't have much to reach for. It's the kind of movie that you should watch only if you are stuck in a hotel room for 90 minutes with nothing to do. Oh, one of the 1-star reviewers said that the "level of nudity" should have given it an R rating: that's absurd -- the only nudity is a very brief glimpse of a man's rear, and that was just as a not-very-surprising mistaken identity punchline.

5/5 Only for those who can understand and enjoy the context of this subtle movie !

Those who can not understand this subtle humor...need to go see the Three Stooges....to find "enjoyment"...or possibly
the front row of a burlesque show!?

This ...wonderful movie demands a grasp of subtle ..farce and humor...

you'd rate it a two star.

Those who would do so...would probably be rated...zero stars...
in the..human personality ...test.

See it and enjoy the magic of subtle humor... it might just catch on here in the USA... and have American directors.... giving humorous substance...instead of cheap thrills...action ad nausia and non sequitor story lines.

You know, I only wanted to see this movie because of the three main stars on the cover. Frances McDormand = amazing, Amy Adams = adorably awesome, Lee Pace = fantastic (plus he's in Pushing Daisies!!) I rented this with the notion of it being a cruddy movie but with some of my favorite actors acting. Boy, was I wrong. The story takes place in about a day, 24-48 hours total, which I think is so cool. It's a cute little story, romantic comedy indeed that i believe was overlooked at the theaters. The acting is MARVELOUS. This is not an oscar-contending movie but it's simplicity is very refreshing. Frances McDomand is a housekeeper of sorts that gets fired from her job, she is on the streets looking for a new one when she stumbles upon Amy Adams business card. Desperately wanting a job, she goes to Amy Adams apartment and her life is changed forever. But not in a bad way, in a more adventurous way. There is a scene or two involving partial nudity and very few swear words, overall this is a very charming movie that I can't wait to watch again!!

I watched this on a whim, as a big fan of Frances McDormand ever since "Fargo." Wasn't certain at first if I would finish it, and the opening in London just before World War II is drab and dark, and it was difficult to see where the director planned to go with it.

The setting then becomes a bit frothy when McDormand's Miss Pettigrew finagles a job as social secretary to a ditzy American actress, Delysia, played by Amy Adams. The scene switches to the flat of one of Delysia's legion of boyfriends. The filmography switches to a very pleasing elegant art deco style, and it acquires more and more sheen in the gorgeous closing nightclub segment.

Was I glad I stuck with "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day." The plot brings along two men capable of deep love, Ciaran Hinds as a lingerie designer who "sees women without their clothes" and Michael the piano player who loves Delysia for who she really is. This sends this film into a far more compelling realm than seemed likely by its opening. Hinds (Caesar in HBO's "Rome") appeals, playing a character of honesty, consideration and tact, and perhaps his is the most memorable turn.

Let's hope director Bharat Nalluri makes more.
