For Die-Hard Fans and Collectors it's Essential...
by Jeffrey A. Hopson (Garland, TX USA)
This dvd is probably very alarming to those unfamiliar with the Genitorturers, and likely a little disappointing to those who have been long-time fans and show-comers (no pun intended!). The viewer gets a glimpse into the dark, perverse carnival world of a Genitorturer show, but its a rather kaleidoscope-ish view, making it a little frustrating that you can't view more clearly what is going on. Others have said here that the sound quality is poor and I agree, and that the jerky video quality is frustrating, and I agree, but what we're talking about here is an important video document in the career of a band, who's notoreity is eclipsed only by, maybe, G.G. Allen (and I'd prefer the Genitorturers any day, myself).
Having been a Gen fan since '98 (attended my first Geni's show at the Galaxy Club in Dallas)I have seen the explicit nature of their live performances dwindle over the years (6 shows now and counting...)and it's no doubt due to the wider spread notoreity of the band and their on-stage antics, resulting in a greater likelihood that law enforcement would invite themselves in rather unexpectedly and shut the whole evening down, resulting in arrests and all the resulting club owner legal woes. I have seen some splendid shows since '98 and I regret that club owners across the country have become cautious of the band and have imposed some of the "limitations" that resulted in the slight "taming" of the show.
The "Society..." dvd's greatest value is purely from a Genitorturer fan's desire to collect anything by them, and I agree with what has been said by others regarding the poor video/audio quality, etc., etc., but the good news is that the band are preparing both a new cd AND a new dvd which, according to their newsletters/MySpace page, will be released soon. I would recommend owning "Society..." if you are a true fan of Gen and the band, simply as a historical document of a groundbreaking band's career.

Great performance art - poor presentation.
by Mondo Vendo (Detroit, Michigan USA)
This appeared to be quite an entertaining Genitorturers show (or shows). Sewing a penis under the testicle sacks, giving an enema which is then feed to the recipient. Plenty of revolting performance art.
The problem is that it is shot music video style with plenty of special video effects, constant cutting, purposefully jerky camera movements, etc etc. It is also very poor video quality.
Performance art such as this really deserves a documentary style approach to the filming. Performance art really needs a static camera with camera movement only to capture particular action.
Unfortunately, the director of this had an Mtv mentality and catered to those entertained by flashing colors and images on a screen.
Of course, the director would not have to put much direction into shooting this documentary style. Have a wide shot and follow important action with closeup.
A live concert performance should be about the concert and not a demonstration of the director's or video editor's abilities.
I've seen the Genitorturers about 8 years ago and I've seen them 2 days ago.
8 years ago, the show was quite elaborate. Girls hanging upside down with Xs taped over their nipples. Gen putting long needles through their breasts, spanking them with paddles, and similar s&m type exploits.
The show 2 days ago was quite tamed down. As with most performance artists (save GG Allin), in the unfortunate tradition of Gwar and Alice Cooper, the Genitorturers have gotten quite lazy on designing the stage show.
Despite being very disappointed in this DVD, it is great performance art that you are not likely to see at current Genitorturers concerts. Therefore I am rating it a little higher than it deserves. Because you are not likely to see a Genitorturers show as elaborate and explicit as this again soon if ever.
The show 2 days ago, the Genitorturers put on quite an impressive show musically. Their music is much better than I thought. However, artists known for performance art should not let the live performance become too heavily focused on the music.
My wish would be that the Genitorturers would bring back as elaborate and explicit stage shows as they did in the past and document a live show of this with proper direction.

Like a Geitorturers show?...not likely
by
I gave Society of Genitorture three stars only because Gen is soo hot she makes it more bearable.
This DVD is a very bad portrayal of a very good show. If you like the Genitorturers and have seen them live you will know that this DVD does no justice to the Genitorturers capablity to shock. It is more distastful than shocking with bad angles and strange camera tricks. Viewing this DVD and not knowing much or not seeing a show would only negate someone's view of the Genitorturers.
I definitely recommend watching the Interview with Gen first, esp if you or someone you are showing this DVD to doesn't know much about the Genitorturers. It is a very nice interview with her. I only wish it could have been longer and possibly a little more personal.
Something interesting to see once, i guess, but it is not necessary to view. Life will go on if you pass this one up.

Very sick, but not that good
by veganMalcontent
Memorable moments on this DVD are the following:
1) Gen sodomizing a she-male with a strap-on (this must have come from one of their European shows!)
2) Gen feeding a slave his own enema (also presumably from a European show.)
I've been a fan of the Genitorturers since their beginning, but this DVD made me feel like a dilettante of the perverse arts. I had thought it impossible not to be turned on by watching a hot blonde chick do some really sick things, but Gen takes one of life's most beautiful gifts, pornography, and makes it truly ugly.
Now this alone is not reason enough to earn a bad review. What causes me not to keep this DVD are the following:
1) The format is basically that of a series of music videos, with studio versions of the songs which are not appreciably different (if at all) from those on _Sin City_.
2) The quality of the video is very poor. But if you're like me, you'll be glad you couldn't make things out better.
3) The audio quality is also very poor.
The bit that I did enjoy was the interview with Gen, where she comes off as being extremely right-brained, but very articulate, and not spacey or stupid. Unfortunately, the interview is the shortest segment on the DVD. I could have watched another 30 minutes of it.
If you want to enjoy the Genitorturers, get _120 Days of Genitorture_ and possibly _Sin City_, then go to a live show. The live shows are really great. In fact, this DVD would have gotten 5 stars if it had simply been a transfer of a live show, like the Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir DVDs, for instance.
