Decent zombie flick with some confusing parts 3.5 stars.
by Puzzle box (Kuwait)
Naoyuki Tomomatsu's "Stacy" 2001 is messy and confusing, but highly entertaining and amusing humorous gore flick. I think it combines different elements from other horror films like Day of The Dead and The Evil Dead series. The plot is sadly lacking, although there are some fun moments to be had, particularly with the 3-girl anti-Romero repeat kill squad and there were a couple of nice gore scenes. However if you're gonna get yourself a decent Japanese zombie/gore flick, then do yourself a favor and buy Versus or Junk instead, this one was slightly confusing and I guess like the reviewer below you have to know more about Japanese culture to fully understand what was going on. The film's basic premise is that girls between the ages of 15 and 17 begin dropping dead, only to arise as flesh hungry zombies known as "stacies". There is no explanation or mythology behind this unusual turn of events, although I assume it is simply an excuse to fill the screen with perky Japanese girls in school uniforms. In order to eradicate the "stacies", death squads called Romeros roam the streets. Some of the funniest moments come from TV advertisements for the death squads, my favorites include the "Join the Squad and kill your own daughter!" advertisement and the Bruce Campbell chainsaw infomercial with the crazy bunny woman. The film had a moral but I'm not sure what it was and the ending was confusing, but it was still an enjoyable Japanese/horror comedy film, and I did laugh a couple of times but it could have been better and less confusing.

I'm Japanese and Just FYI
by A. Nakamura (Osaka, Osaka Japan)
"Stacy" is from Japanese Words "Sute Isi" which means a "Stepping Stone".
This movie (or the original novel written by Kenji Otsuki) is a metaphor.
You know, in the 80's in Japan, there was a boom called 'the Band Boom.'
There were many Rock'n'roll, Soul, Pop Bands of various styles.
And After the fever gone, Japanese music scene went an unified, boring stage.
In this movie, at the begining, the zombies terrified the whole world.
But in the end, people leaned how to tame them.
Kenji Otsuki was once a Rock'n'roll (or Heavy Metal) icon and had a very
big time and then he got losed. In other words, the 80's bands including
his band 'Kinniku shoujo tai' got overwhelmed by the commercialism of
Japanese music industrials.
Thru' this experience he wrote this novel.
He felt that his band and other bands were merely the stepping stones
('Sute Ishi' or 'Stacy') during the evolution (or degeneration) of Japanese music scene.
So if u know the background like this, u'll find this movie is rather
cynical or critical metaphor and u'll find this movie more enjoyable!

Decent camp, but I expected more
by Nick Cato (Staten Island, NY United States)
STACY is chock-full-of EVIL DEAD references and other in-jokes, and features some wild gore scenes (although comicly done), but after years of waiting to see this I was expecting a bit more. Zombie completists will still want this for their collection. Fun, but a bit too corny for my taste.

Classic Japanese!!
by Crysta (Washington D.C.)
i have lived in Japan for awhile so when i watched this i knew what i was getting into. Believe or not, alot of japanese film makers want to make the viewers find the point of the movie or leave you wondering instead of handing the plot lines and meaning on a plate for you.
Yes the special effects are cheesy, and if you dont know jack about japanese culture you might as well grab a cup to put your money in for cursing cause you will be saying WTF, and WTF was that bleep bleep bleep....get my drift?
anyways i liked it. i understood the plot and the meaning. I gave it a 4 because thats typical japanese story development.

A review from Zombiefans!
by Zombob (U.S.A.)
What a bizarre movie! While it has a lot of the "zombie movie" mainstays, it's oddly unique.
1) ACTING--while the acting wasn't incredible, it was passable. A few of the performances seemed forced, but the leads were okay.
2) ZOMBIES--the zombies are the typical "romero shamblers." The make up for the zombies was minimal, possible so the viewer could still see that "schoolgirls" were killing and eating people.
3) SPECIAL EFFECTS--WOW! The majority of the budget must have been spent of the blood and gore in this movie! The blood flows free in this one, and the gore is wonderfully over the top!
4) HOMAGES--the people behind this movie obviously love zombie movies and people like George Romero and Bruce Campbell. There are so many references to them in this movie, it almost becomes a game to try and figure out where some of the references are from!
Overall, not a bad movie. It's a fun little romp into zombieland, albeit a little strange and confusing.

Stacy Summary
In the early 21st century, teenage girls between the ages of 15 and 17 begin dying all over the world. Shortly before they die, the girls succumb to NDH (Near Death Happiness), a "pre-death" state of absolute bliss and joy. Once dead, girls come back as a flesh-eating zombie nicknamed "Stacy". The world is in chaos. Countries suffer from famine, war, and zero-population growth because of this teenage death epidemic. To keep the zombies from returning and eating innocent people, families are urged to kill their daughters before they are allowed to die by this mysterious disease (chopping them up and leaving them in garbage bags for govern-ment-sanctioned pick-up). In a Japanese military base, some undead schoolgirls are held and tested by a scientist who tries to unlock the secrets behind the girls return from the dead. Suddenly, the world turns upside down yet again as a soldier, in a fit of depression, lets the girls free to storm the base and devour anyone in their path. Based on the popular Japanese novel by Kenji Otsuki, Stacy is a bloodbath of extreme gore effects and comedy with elements of Resident Evil and George A. Romer's classic Day of the Dead.
