The colorful costume designs were also skillfully matched to the work’s kaleidoscopic levels. This production featured a cast of superlative actor-singers, recruited from Munich and Stuttgart as well as the Vienna State Opera. A contemporary review, from the Vienna newspaper Express, testifies to the result: "The scenes with these two artists [Sena Jurinac and Paul Schöffler]... can be counted among the exemplary instances of great operatic performance."
