Outstanding!!
by S. A. Morrison (Helena, MT USA)
If you are a Deep Purple or Ian Gillan fan you will love this DVD. Like most people who reviewed this DVD I would like to have seen a little more footage of the band with Ritchie Blackmore but even so this is a very indepth history of one of the best rock and roll singers in the world. Your money is well spent with this DVD!

A Wild & Wonderful Ride
by G. YEO (Singapore)
This was generally an excellent biography and packing six hours worth of interviews and performances makes this disc a real find. But nonetheless, I was expecting more archival footage. What we do get are some excellent interviews and great storytelling:
a) There's a good account of Episode 6 - Ian's early band here with footage of him performing (great) but then we fast forward to Gillan in Deep Purple, which for the most part becomes a Deep Purple documentary.
b) A lot of the documentary focusses on the Blackmore-Gillan relationship or lack thereof. I've read Ian's autobiography so most of the Blackmore-Gillan issues weren't new to me. This discussion plays a central theme in Gillan's life (and the film), being that the poor relationship with Blackmore drove him out of Purple the first time and altered the face of rock history.
c) I wanted to hear and learn more about Gillan's solo career. Again, not much here despite Ian's prolific output during the seventies. We get glimpses of the music.
d) Fast forward to the Black Sabbath album which was amusing.
e) Then it's back to the Purple reunion again. Again, some nice footage.
My feeling is that there was more stuff but the producers just wanted to get the overall story across. Fortunately, there are several interviews which are added to the special features.
The DVD does have liner notes, but not a proper track listing on the packaging. DVD 2 is a concert tour - but without a song list / chapter. Not so good.
Overall, I enjoyed this thanks to Gillan's storytelling abilities, and honesty. The man is interesting to watch and he's still rocking.

An excellent sumup but lacks the spice
by H. Dadon (Coral Springs, FL. United States)
OK, this is about Ian Gillan and he is absolutely entitled to put the story the way he wants it to be seen/read; so for obvious reasons he decides: Blackmore is not getting any spotlight here... Except for the necessary references to the past and the chronology of events, the sheer majority of this memoir (?) has a lot more of the newer Deep Purple era with Morse and Airey.
It's a greet collection (and a superb production by the way) don't get me wrong, but if any one who loves the Deep Purple family like I do, and who is looking to get the very balanced and two-sided story (which I doubt there will ever be one as such), might be a bit disappointed... Whether Gillan likes it or not (and most of us fans know the Who's and Why's), Blackmore was the propelling force and the only one to get the most and the best out of Gillan.
Gillan puts a nice touch to this fully packed story from all of his past and current adventures including some funny stories on the Black Sabbath days, so one can really get a rare glimpse into Gillan's philosophy of life. The 2xDVD set includes a lot of interviews from past and current figures in Gillan's life, including his own wife and beautiful daughter too. You won't regret buying it, so to cut my rambling short, just buy it and enjoy. Just make sure you have a bout 6hrs to spare!!!

Fantastic---and enjoyably LONG---DVD; well worth your time & $
by Vince Palamara (South Park/Bethel Park, PA)
As a huge Deep Purple fanatic, I highly recommend this amazingly well done DVD on the legendary MK II vocalist Ian Gillan, as it is also a very accomplished biography of the band Deep Purple, as well. While there IS a small part of me that would like to deduct a tad for the overwhelming Morse-era video footage ("the best Deep Purple cover band ever"-I digress, but why were Deep Purple so up in arms about the Rod Evans debacle in 1980? After all, in both instances [the band today and then], there was only one original member present: Evans and Ian Paice), you just cannot: it is so entertaining and well done. In fact, I hated to see it end...and it is over 6 hours long (the main feature is 2 and a half hours)! Get this one asap.

This is a good one
by Chris (Kalamazoo, MI)
Got this DVD for Christmas. Pretty enjoyable all the way through. I expected the live clips to be about 50/50 Blackmore and Morse. Instead it's more like 99% Morse. That's cool though. This is Gillan's project and he can do whatever he wants. Greatest hard rock vocalist ever, by the way...
