Touted by Life magazine as 'the world's greatest rhythmic drummer' and described by percussion icon Louie Bellson as 'Mother Earth coming alive with syncopation,' it would be impossible to overstate the importance of drum legend Elvin Jones in the evolution of Jazz. His family is considered Jazz royalty, with his brothers, pianist Hank Jones and trumpeter Thad Jones, equally revered in the Jazz community. By the mid 1960s he was a member of John Coltrane's groundbreaking Quartet, playing on massively influential recordings such as A Love Supreme and 'Live' at the Village Vanguard.
On this special DVD, Jazz veterans Willie Pickens and Chip Jackson brilliantly orchestrate the power of Jones' drums, while young confrere saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and veteran Sonny Fortune showcase their skills while helping accentuate their mentor's bold, free flowing style that helped move his boisterous instrument from the back of the club to the forefront of Music.
