LIBERTY, DARING, FARCE, AND SUPERB SWORDPLAY
by Geary A., Jones
Stuart Granger and Mel Ferrer were terrific in this laudable version of Rafael Sabatini's sumptuous swashbuckler. Only THE BLACK SWAN with Tyrone Power ever came close to the spectacular swordfighting sequences in this film, add Janet Leigh, and Eleanor Parker at the height of their beauty, and allure and magic ensued. On top of the excellent cast, the music and cinematography were quite outstanding. One of the very best in the genre.

Scaramouche
by T. Forster (Victoria, Australia)
Love Stuart Granger. What a Hunk of a man! As like all his movies they are not to be missed. I wish I could get more but alot of the ones I want are not available. Glad to have this in my collection it is a must see even if you don't like hunky men like him. Me I wish all men were like him and Howard Keel they were MEN!

This now my favorite. I felt it was a little slow, but if I had watched it 20 years ago it would have seem more up to date. My husband enjoyed it.

An improvement on Sabatini's novel
by Genevieve Hayes (Australia)
Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, Andre Moreau (Stewart Granger), a man of uncertain parentage, is forced to join an acting troupe in order to hide after antagonizing the Marquis de Maynes (Mel Ferrer). However, even while in hiding, Moreau plots ways of extracting revenge on de Maynes for the murder of his best friend.
Based on the novel by Rafael Sabatini, writer Ronald Millar takes the central ideas behind the novel and actually manages to improve on it. Although considered by many to be a classic, the novel "Scaramouche" is episodic and at times gets mired down by the characters making revolutionary speeches that rapidly become tiresome. The movie "Scaramouche" solves these problems by trimming down the history and rearranging the events of the novel to make them flow better. The result is a light-hearted, light-weight piece of fluff with some pretty impressive swordfights sprinkled throughout. The final swordfight, set in a theatre, is one of my favourite movie swordfights of all time. The ending is a bit abrupt (and doesn't make all that much sense, if you think about it for more than a few seconds), and the beginning contains a bit more set-up than would normally be desired, but overall it's an entertaining and fast-paced movie that has held up pretty well to the passage of time.

Inspiring, funny, exciting; Brilliant!
by E. M. Van Court (Honolulu, Hawai'i, USA)
Scaramouche is the tale of an illegitimate son of a noble with a sense of perspective, a sense of humor, and a sense of duty to his friends. When his friend is killed by a murderous noble, he vows revenge. To hide, he becomes a clown in a troupe of travelling performers. Along the way, he falls for his own sister, and for one of his fellow performers. He finds the swordmaster who taught his nemesis to fence, and masters l'arme blanche in order face his enemy again.
If you don't want to learn to fence, don't watch this movie. You'll start having errant thoughts about picking up a new hobby...
Through out the film, our hero faces every challenge and every setback with a smile. He sees the ridiculous in his own life and the world around him. And uses humor to carry him when all odds are against him. There are worse role models.
I enjoyed Scaramouche a lot, and there is enough depth in this movie to justify watching it twice. If you haven't seen it for the first time, you have a treat ahead of you.
E. M. Van Court

As first lines go,
Scaramouche
's is irresistible: "He was born with a gift of laughter, and a sense that the world was mad." This exuberant period adventure is pretty irresistible itself--even more than
Captain Blood
and
The Sea Hawk
, likewise derived from Rafael Sabatini novels. Within more or less one day in pre-revolutionary France, devil-may-care Stewart Granger learns he's the bastard offspring of a nobleman, gets orphaned, realizes he's fallen in love with his sister (Janet Leigh), swears to avenge his best friend's murder, becomes a hunted traitor, and breaks into show business. George Sidney directs as if making an MGM musical, only with swashbuckling instead of song-and-dance. The unlikely casting of Granger and Mel Ferrer as overripe nemeses proves delightful, cameraman Charles (

) Rosher's Technicolor palette alternates
commedia dell'arte
garishness and misty, Watteau-like imagery, and the climactic six-and-a-half-minute duel all over a Parisian theater is a tour de force.
