Becoming a Mother
by Amos Lassen (Little Rock, Arkansas)
"Tick Tock Lullaby"
Becoming a Mother
Amos Lassen
Sasha and Maya are a lesbian couple who are on a quest to find the right sperm donor and they realize that biologically time is running out. Lisa Gornick wrote, directed and stars in her film "Tick Tock Lullaby". She is Sasha, a cartoon artist who lives with her partner, Maya (Raquel Cassady). They both want a baby and they both want that baby to be conceived naturally and even thought this is a real problem, the film gives it to us with humor. At the same time that the women are looking for a man, Fiona and Todd, a straight couple are trying to have a child. They however are having problems getting along and they therefore are not doing things as they should.
The film uses the concept of having a child to represent the love that two people feel for each other as many feel. It is more than just a small being to be parented but an embodiment of love. The creation of a child is the result of a combination of two people who love each other. Therefore the premise of the film, seems to me at least, to be not only what is to be mother but what it takes to create a child. If the child is simply the result of conception by donor, is there a lack of romance in the creation? As the film explores this, the attractive and sophisticated actors become involved with wonderful dialog.

who are these people?
by fagirl (austin tx)
I think babies are great really - but why does every lesbian in every film have to want one so bad even straight people could identify with her? that's all - can't we do better as subject matter? the world is very crowded.

For every woman with a biological clock
by J. Olson (San Francisco, CA USA)
This is a wonderfully poignant and charming little movie about three sets of prospective parents: a lesbian couple, a straight couple, and a single woman determined to get some sperm from an unwitting one-night stand. You just don't see films like this being made in the US (this is a British film). Smart and funny and full of astute emotional observations on the universal question of when and whether (and how) to have a baby.
Tick Tock Lullaby Summary
Cartoonist Sasha (writer-director Lisa Gornick) and her attorney girlfriend Maya (Brit TV phenom Raquel Cassidy) have heterosexual procreation envy. If only they could get pregnant by mistake like everyone else does, laments Sasha. Bursting with smart, tender observations on prospective parenthood, Tick Tock Lullaby is a clever exploration of sexuality and the search for sperm in hip thirty-som
A sexy and charming comedy about one of life's biggest decisions and how the more you have to think about it, the harder it is. Sasha, a cartoonist, wishes that she could get pregnant by mistake with her girlfriend, Maya. Having to be so rational about it is putting her off.
Presuming that straight people have it easier, she creates two heterosexual scenarios in order to further investigate procreation. As she draws more, the fiction begins to influence Sasha's experience - or perhaps Sasha is making her anxieties rub off on her characters.
